Wrexham.com has invited Wrexham & Clwyd South Members of Parliament and Assembly Members to write a monthly article with updates on their work in Parliament and the Senedd, and closer to home – you can find them all here.

Today, Wrexham’s MP Sarah Atherton writes…

Last month in Parliament I made my maiden speech. Doing so gave me the opportunity to take a moment and reflect on Wrexham’s rich cultural heritage and to pay tribute to some of the amazing organisations and businesses that play a vital role in our community. Many of whom I’ve had the privilege to meet over the past few months, and look forward to meeting many more.

As I’m sat here today, as the first female MP for Wrexham and the first female Conservative MP for Wales, I can’t help but take a moment to think of all the amazing women and organisations that have helped me get here today. I look forward to continuing to lend my support to other women wishing to get into politics.

I’m incredibly honoured to announce that I have been elected onto the Defence Select Committee, having served in the intelligence Corps, our armed forces something I care passionately about.

The military footprint of Wales is economically and culturally significant and I hope to use my new role to positively influence the policy direction of the UK, when it comes to our defence strategy.

I will continue to stand up for the rights of veterans and our armed forces, ensuring that the UK becomes the best place in the word to be a veteran. I will continue to meet with those who bravely put their lives on the line in their service to our country, to see what more can be done to achieve this. It was a pleasure to attend the veteran’s Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast club and the Help for Heroes event in Wrexham recently to share stories and to discuss the great contribution they’ve made to our country.

Further, I have been appointed as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Wales, Simon Hart, and the Welsh office. I am looking forward to working alongside Simon Hart to promote Wrexham’s interest and to work on behalf of everyone in Wales.

Last week I welcomed students from Hafod-y-Wern Primary School, in Wrexham, to Parliament to celebrate their winning of the Kellogg’s Breakfast Awards.

Being an MP means I have to split my time between Wrexham and Westminster, whilst this can be a challenging, it has its perks as I got to celebrate St David’s Day twice. It was great to see our town come together to celebrate during the St David’s Day parade, highlighting the best of our Welsh culture.

Meanwhile in London, I attended the St David’s Day service at the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft, where I got to hear the pupils from the ‘London Welsh School’ sing some beautiful Welsh songs whilst in traditional dress.

Over the past few months I have held numerous advice surgeries across Wrexham, if you’d like to book an appointment please do so my emailing me: [email protected]

Looking ahead, I will shortly be opening my constituency office in Wrexham where my team and I will be able to provide help and support to everyone, regardless of political affiliations. In the meantime, I am easily accessible via the contact details below.

Write to me at my London office: Sarah Atherton, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.
