A view from Clwyd South’s Member of Parliament

Clwyd South MP Simon Baynes writes…

In the last month, I have been very pleased to continue my regular visits to businesses, community organisations and exceptional individuals in Clwyd South who collectively have done so much to make our area proud and help our community recover from Covid-19. As the local MP, it is incredibly heartening to see how many ground-breaking achievements are made in our community.

I have also been highlighting in Parliament the concerns and achievements of people in Clwyd South, most recently by attending the recall of Parliament on 18th August to debate the very worrying situation in Afghanistan. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the crisis and I strongly support the Prime Minister’s commitment to provide sanctuary for refugees from Afghanistan here in the UK.

Also, in Parliament, on 20th July, I praised the Wockhardt employees in Clwyd South for their role in enabling the UK Government to roll out vaccine doses swiftly and effectively in the UK, and to support countries across the rest of the world who have been badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The contribution of Wockhardt staff in Clwyd South has been second-to-none. And the Foreign Secretary’s response to my question recognised their tremendous contribution which has proved vital in helping countries across the rest of the world, like India, who have been particularly hard-hit by Coronavirus.

I was also very pleased to praise in Home Office Questions in the House of Commons on 12th July the neighbourhood policing teams in Clwyd South, highlighting their proactive work with Youth Services in engaging with young people, particularly in the Ceiriog Valley.

With regard to visiting organisations in Clwyd South, on Tuesday 27th July, I was pleased to welcome the UK Cabinet Minister, Rt Hon Amanda Milling MP, on a visit to Llangollen Railway following its reopening. Amanda’s visit came as part of her Levelling Up Tour – during which she is visiting areas which are part of the UK Government’s Levelling Up agenda to provide jobs and opportunities across the whole of the UK.

2) Simon Baynes MP and Joe Allman (Captain of the U19s Cefn Druids Football Team) at The Rock in Rhosymedre on Friday 30th July 2021.

I also very much enjoyed visiting Cefn Druids Football Club in Rhosymedre, on Friday 30th July, to congratulate them on winning the Wales Futsal Championship. As a result, the Club’s Futsal team has qualified to play in the UEFA Champions League this season representing Wales – a wonderful achievement for a local club. Later that day, I also visited Glyn Wylfa in Chirk to offer my congratulations to the amazing team there for being recognised as one of the Top Social Enterprises in the UK. During my visit, I was able to see for myself the hard work and dedication they put in to ensuring that Glyn Wylfa can meet its objective of benefitting the local community in Chirk. It was also a pleasure to visit Caffi Wylfa next door. I then went on to meet with volunteers from the Offa’s Dyke Association near Chirk who are doing extraordinary work to maintain a much-loved national monument, through the Offa’s Dyke Rescue Fund – which I am full-square behind.

In this same spirit of achievement, I was proud to congratulate students across Clwyd South who, this month, their GCSE and A-Level results – many of whom will now be facing exciting decisions for the future. I know from experience how hard our young people work to achieve their results, so I applaud them all for their hard work – especially under such challenging circumstances.
