Wrexham Scouts spent an estimated 500 ‘Scout-hours’ helping the community during a seven-day-period.

As part of Scout Community Week which took place across the UK in June, youngsters helped out with several projects including the one at the Maelor, joining Keep Wales Tidy, and helping out North Wales Police.

The Scouts helped their local community by taking part projects up and down the County Borough including cleaning the windows at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

David Morris from the Scouts, who also works at the Maelor Hospital said: “My job takes me out and about in the hospital and I noticed the windows were a bit dirty. I contacted management who were only too happy for the Scouts to help out give the place a spring clean.

“We concentrated on the ground floor windows on the main corridor so we didn’t effect patient care. Groups across the District were really keen to get involved.

“While we’ve left a few more smears than a professional window cleaner, for kids with an average age of 10 I think they did a great job!”

Bishop’s Own Scout Group joined forces litter picking the local area with their local PCSO and the Co-op shop supported the effort with lots of donations from their customers. Gwersyllt and Hope Scout Groups cleaned up their local area by helping Keep Wales Tidy at Alyn Waters Country Park.

Wrexham MP Ian Lucas was very impressed with the Scouts’ efforts saying “Wrexham Scouts deserve a hearty pat on the back for this. Their commitment is a shining example to us all and their work at the Maelor hospital shows they are a vital part of the Wrexham community.”

The Scouts are accepting donations online atmydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/wrexhamscoutscommunityweek. All money raised will go to support local Scouting with a proportion going to support UK-wide projects to bring Scouting to disadvantaged groups. They would like to thank B&Q, Tesco and Sainsbury’s for their generous donations of cleaning products to complete the task.
