Residents in Wrexham are being warned never to disclose card or other personal details to cold callers.

The warning follows reports of householders receiving a telephone call saying they are due a refund of bank charges or similar refund. The caller states they are from the Ministry of Justice. In the most recent scam callers are asked for debit card numbers and they try to demonstrate the call is genuine by telling the recipient the first 8 digits of the card number and then asking the recipient to disclose the last 8 digits.

Cllr David Griffiths, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said:

“Scams of this type are often quite believable and can easily lead to loss of funds from your bank account. The best advice is never to disclose card or other personal details to cold callers. Always check by calling your bank direct on a separate number.”

Suspicious calls or incidents should be reported to the police on 101.
