The popular Wales Comic Con landed at Glyndwr University yesterday with its most successful event so far.

Thousands of Sci-Fi and wrestling fans attended the event to meet their favourite stars and to have truly memorable day out.

Arguably this years line up surpassed those of the past, with Billy Boyd  (Lord Of The Rings) John Challis, Warwick Davies and Hannah Spearritt all making an appearance at this years event.

Due to the big names in attendance, many fans opted for the Early Bird tickets, allowing them entry to the venue to meet the guests before the doors opened to the general public at 11am.

Last year organisational issues and surprise number of guests meant that many fans were left frustrated at the length of time they were in the queues and the small venue. Despite long queues throughout the day, it’s safe to say any problems of disorganisation and overcapacity were dealt with.

Wales Comic Con Queues

Thousands of people attended the event at Glyndwr University. The queues were pretty impressive.

As the event has grown in popularity over the past few years, one of the main problems has been the venue not being able to hold the large capacity of guests and stars. However, for the first time the event was held at various locations throughout the university, including the William Aston Hall and the Catrin Finch Centre. This worked in the Comic Con’s favour, making it feel more like a convention than in previous year.

Alongside the chance to take meet the stars and take part in photo shoots, there was also a great selection of stalls selling customised and unique items. Some of the best on offer included movie posters, graphic drawings and some rather interesting zombie teddy bears. Away from the crowds inside the sports centre, there was also an owl sanctuary and the chance to have your photo taken with the Tardis and well-known television cars.

In previous years the Q&A sessions have been held in a corner of the Glyndwr sports centre, which has sometimes meant they can get lost in the crowd. This year they were held away from the main event and took place in the William Aston Hall. This year there were sessions from the stars of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Lord Of The Rings, Red Dwarf, Game Of Thrones and Star Wars.

Some of the events were running behind 40 minutes or so, but this didn’t put a downer on neither fans or guests, who were clearly all enjoying every second of the Comic Con.

As predicted Red Dwarf was one of the most popular parts of the day, with the entire cast of the show taking part in autograph signings, photo shoots and a Q&A session. Easily one of the highlights of the day was their Q&A session, which was performed to an overflowing William Aston Hall.

The Q&A session itself involved fewer questions, and more anecdotes and banter from the cast of the popular sitcom. This is however what made this session stand out, as the cast were clearly enjoying every second of the session and clearly weren’t ready to leave the stage at the end of their 40 minutes.

Over the past 5 years the Wales Comic Con has gone from strength to strength, and this year was no different. The mistakes of last year have clearly been rectified, and as a result of this, Mercury Promotions were able to deliver their strongest Comic Con to date.
