A popular Wrexham event held earlier this summer has raised thousands of pounds for a local hospice.

It has been announced that the annual ‘Underneath the Arches’ event, which took place on July 11th has raised over £5000 for Nightingale House Hospice.

The event, which was organised by Wrexham County Borough Council and the Destination Wrexham team worked collaboratively with local hospice Nightingale House Hospice to raise additional funds for the charity by offering £1 per ticket sold.

In total the ticket sales, together with the additional sale of glow merchandise on the night equated to a donation of over £5,000 which will be used towards funding patient care at the hospice based on Chester Road.

Margaret Hollings, Fundraising and Events Manager at Nightingale House Hospice said: “We are absolutely delighted with this donation, and have been so proud to be associated to Underneath the Arches this year.

“The atmosphere on the night and the support shown to this event, as well as the hospice has been tremendous and we look forward working with Wrexham County Borough Council and Destination Wrexham again in 2015.

“Our thanks go to Wrexham Country Borough Council including the Marketing and Events team and Destination Wrexham for thinking of the hospice this year, and for ensuring such a significant donation towards the hospices work”.

Underneath the Arches took place back in July and saw over 5,000 visitors attend the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Canal World Heritage Site to enjoy live music by local artists including the Big Beat Band, Rhythm Train, Luke Gallagher and The Avenues.

The event culminated in the illumination of the aqueduct and a rather impressive firework display.

Joe Bickerton, Destination Manager at Wrexham County Borough Council said: “The support from the Nightingale House Hospice income generation team enabled us to stage another fantastic World Heritage Site celebration event this summer at Pontcysyllte.

“This was the third year we’ve staged the event and the volunteers from the hospice really helped our visitors have a great night. The Destination Wrexham team have formed a great understanding of the hospice’s valuable service in the last 12-months, so we’re delighted to have been able to make this donation.”
