A warning for residents of Wrexham to ‘be on their guard’ has been issued following a cold calling incident in the area.

Trading Standards Flintshire & Wrexham together with North Wales Police are warning residents to be on their guard following an cold telephone calling incident in Wrexham area.

An older resident was telephoned and advised that the company calling would be able to obtain a substantial reduction of utility bill charges. The caller advised that an administrative charge of £299 was payable in order for them to call out and conduct a survey.

The householder paid the charge by card over the phone but later became suspicious and alerted Police and Trading Standards. Fortunately the householder’s bank was able to stop the payment.

Householders are cautioned to be on their guard and exercise great caution if they are cold called and offered services for which there are up front payments.

The advice from Trading Standards is to decline any such offer. Seek help from an independent, trustworthy organisation If you think you are paying too much for your gas, electricity or water.
