Road Reopens After Three-Storey Building Collapses In Wrexham
A road in Wrexham has reopened after a three-storey building collapsed suddenly last night.
The road between Tenters Square and Chapel Street remained closed until early this morning after the former Wrexham Motoring Supplies shop collapsed shortly after 4:30pm last night.
North Wales Police, the fire service and representatives from Wrexham Council attended the scene. The police helicopter was also spotted hovering above and used heat-seeking equipment to search the site.
It is believed that no one was injured as a result of the incident.
The road opened shortly before 7am this morning, however the pavement just outside the property remains closed off to members of the public.
It is believed the building was due to be demolished within the next few weeks, however the remainder of the property was demolished last night. Much of the site now remains as rubble, with the collapsed building leaving quite a large, vacant space on the street.
Many people had popped down throughout the morning to have a look at the scene, with a lot of people stood on the other side of the street talking about last night’s events. Local councillor Alun Jenkins was also in attendance to chat / inform people on the situation.
Since the news broke last night, many people have taken to Facebook and Twitter to comment on the incident and the remaining properties in the Pen-y-Bryn area – with many stating that it is ‘sad that the area has been neglected for so long’.
Tomme Darlington said: “The council keep going on about it being a gateway to town yet are happy to have the first impressions being like that. It’s a shame that our historic buildings have to go in this way rather than be kept and modernised and built on the back of. I’m very pleased there is so much redevelopment going on in the area as anything now is an improvement.”
Carol Ann Burton added: “It’s a pity that Pen-y-Bryn has been neglected. There are some lovely old buildings there that should of been renovated and could be used for housing. A lot of money was wasted recently repaving King Street when it could of been better spent elsewhere.
