Plans to extend Welsh medium primary school and increase pupil capacity given the go ahead
Plans to extend a Welsh-medium school in Wrexham have been given the go ahead.
Members of Wrexham Council’s planning committee unanimously backed an application to increase capacity at Ysgol Bro Alun in Gwersyllt at a meeting last night.
The extension will allow the school to accomodate a further 105 pupils – increasing from the current provision for 210 pupils to 315, plus 45 nursery places.
The £5.9 million school opened in 2013 and currently has provision for 210 pupils. But there has been criticism from some parents after their child was refused a place in their desired Welsh medium primary school.
As part of the redevelopment two new classrooms with storage areas, cloakrooms, toilets and circulation spaces will be created. It will also provide a new childcare Early Education Unit.
The existing games court will be relocated to the west of the school grounds.
Last year executive board members backed proposals to extend the school to allow for an increase of pupil numbers.
A capital investment of £1.3 million from Welsh Government to allow building work has been secured , along with a separate grant to provide ‘wrap around child care provision’.
