A petition campaigning to save a Wrexham music studio has gained hundreds of signatures from local supporters.

The Vic Studios – based at the Victoria Centre on Hill Street, Wrexham – has provided rehearsal rooms, studios and recording help for young musicians in Wrexham for the best part of a decade.

However the future of the studios are now under threat, with Wrexham Council launching a public consultation as part of their search to make budget savings of £45million.

Now a petition has been launched to help save the studios, which has helped young musicians from across Wrexham launch their careers.

The ‘Save The Vic’ petition has so far received 639 signatures (at time of writing), just 161 short of the 800 target. A Facebook page with 284 members has also been launched.

The ‘Save The Vic’ Facebook Page comments: “Vic Studios have been a valuable resource for all up and coming musicians in and around the Wrexham area for a number of years, providing help and assistance to aspiring artists, a place for bands to practice and somewhere you can record your music without paying extortionate prices.

“Without the Vic, the 400+ people who use it every year will have to travel further, pay more and transport all their own gear to somewhere further afield, at a higher price. Musicians young and old use the Vic, people have travelled to record a demo here, and many bands use it weekly for rehearsals, so why stand idly by and let a resource you use, or your friends may use, get closed down.”

Wrexham MP Ian Lucas has called the decision “short-sighted” and written to the council to make clear his opposition to the closure.

He is also encouraging those who feel the same way to make their views known – and to move quickly as the consultation closes later this week.

Mr Lucas said: “Wrexham has a vibrant local music scene – something which does not happen by accident. That scene, with events like Focus Wales, brings people into the town, brings trade to the town and helps put Wrexham on the map.

“Helping support music at a grassroots level – in the way the Vic Studios do – is hugely important and, I believe, is vital to the lifeblood of the town. Closing this studio is, I believe, a short-sighted decision. I made clear my opposition to any plans to close the Vic Studios and would urge others to let their views be known too.”

This weekend a series of events will be held at ‘Rewind’ in the town centre, which will showcase the achievements of the musicians who have benefited from the Vic Studios.
