A petition has been launched to ask Wrexham Council to commit to housing ten Syrian refugees.

The ongoing crisis gained more national focus yesterday when five children were among twelve migrants who drowned while trying to reach Greece, with a now sadly iconic picture being taken of one of the dead children.

The petition is addressed to Wrexham Council Leader Mark Pritchard and reads: “If every Council in the UK took just 10 families fleeing the butchery and barbarity of Daesh (ISIL) 3 year old Aylan and millions of women and children would not be washed ashore dead on Europe’s beaches. Let’s not stand aside.”

The petition was launched this evening by Luke Evans from Pandy, we asked him what motivated him to start the petition: “What motivated me is the lack of compassion the Prime Minister has in calling refugees ‘a swarm’, lacking the courage to intervene against ‘Daesh’, (ISIL) and then refuse accept asylum applications at Embassies in Turkey.”

Prior to the petition being launched Wrexham.com asked Wrexham Council if any proposals had been put forward by members locally along the lines of Liverpool Council who are looking to offer to house 100 refugees. The request was placed late this afternoon, so we hope to update readers with the answer at some point tomorrow.

The petition can be read, and signed if you feel so inclined, by clicking here.

Wrexham.com has also been passed two further links this evening, one to the Wrexham/Chester Calais Refugee Action Group that is looking to raise £200 to enable travel down to Calais to donate goods to the refugees, the goods that can be donated via their Facebook group.
