Changes To Opening Hours At Wrexham Libraries

Opening and closing times across Wrexham libraries are set to be implemented next week. 

From Monday 12th May the reduction of library opening hours will come into force. The reduction sees some libraries in the borough have Saturday closures and reductions to morning and evening opening hour.

At the start of the year Wrexham.com reported that opening hours across all Wrexham’s libraries will face a reduction of up to 19%.

The revised patten of opening hours has been based on survey of usage and is part of Wrexham Council’s ongoing cuts to make savings of around £45m.

Wrexham’s libraries have been a hot topic of debate in recent months, with the Homes, Environment and Communities Scrutiny Committee last year rejecting proposals to close libraries in Brymbo, Rhos and Gresford. Instead the committee opted for a 26% reduction in opening hours across the County Borough. Along with this the Committee recommended that the use of community hubs as a possible option to house the libraries, was also looked into.

However the revised report was rejected, with the  Executive Board voting in favour to close Brymbo and Gresford libraries, along with a reduction of opening times across the remaining libraries in the borough.

Speaking in February Lead Member for Communities, Partnership and Collaboration Cllr Hugh Jones said: ““I cannot go on or recommend reducing the opening hours by 26%, as this would do considerable damage across the County Borough and result in a library service not fit for purpose. We need to provide sufficient opening hours to meet the needs of certain protective groups.”
