Open Day to Showcase Proposed Improvements to Wrexham’s Cemetery
An event showcasing proposals for the restoration and improvement of Wrexham Cemetery will take place next month.
On Sunday 13th December between 1 and 3pm an open day highlighting the proposals for the church will be on display at the Wrexham Cemetery, Ruabon Road.
The purpose of the Open Day is to enable the local community to review the proposals for protecting Wrexham Cemetery’s historical landscape and buildings.
Last year Wrexham.com reported that the Victorian Cemetery was in line for a renovation after the council successfully obtained funding of £1.2 Million by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to refurbish and protect the historic Wrexham Cemetery Buildings, old cemetery railings and the landscape of the Victorian Cemetery.
Wrexham Cemetery was laid out between 1874 and 1876 by Yeoman Strachan of Wrexham, before it was later extended eastwards. The cemetery is on the register of Historic Parks and Gardens of Wales and is listed as a grade two structure. The buildings are on the at risk register of the Local Authority and the cemetery is in urgent need of restoration and improvement.
The cemetery has played an important role in Wrexham’s history and helps provide an understanding of Wrexham ‘s cultural heritage. Cadw, consider the cemetery is of local, regional and national significance, due to the well preserved nature of the cemetery and its landscape and the Polish community buried there.
The renovation project involves the restoration of the Victorian buildings and landscape and the improvement of access for the local community, in terms of both physical access and the development of educational and volunteering opportunities.
Following on from the open day on December 10th, the plans will then be left on view at the cemetery entrance for people to look at until the 10th of January, when the cemetery is open (between 10am – 4pm).
