North West Cancer Research Launches Wrexham Committee
North West Cancer Research has announced the launch of a new committee that will serve the Wrexham area.
The newly-launched Wrexham committee will undertake various fundraising activities such as coffee mornings, cheese and wine evenings, music recitals and concerts, quizzes and golf lessons courtesy of a local golf pro who is eager to support the cause. It will also bring together anyone who would like to get involved, and offers a great chance to meet people while raising money for a vital cause.
Their first challenge though is the organisation of an inspirational walking challenge, which will see the branch’s founders tackle all fifteen 3,000ft Welsh peaks in three days.
The branch has been set up by Garden Village resident Jayne Belton (secretary), her husband Ray Dickson (chair) and friend David Evans (treasurer).
Jayne got involved with the charity after being diagnosed with cancer in February this year. After booking an appointment for what she thought was a verruca, she was told that it was actually a malignant melanoma. She soon underwent surgery to remove the melanoma and is now fortunately free of cancer, recently returning to her Local Authority job as a Children’s Safeguarding Manager.
Jayne said: “When we met with NWCR, we found out that more money goes directly to cancer research through NWCR than most other cancer charities. We were also impressed that the research was done locally in Bangor, Liverpool and Lancaster. I later found out that my own consultant, Mr Rowan Pritchard-Jones, receives funding from NWCR for his research, so setting up a Wrexham branch seemed like the right thing to do.
“Now we have set up the branch, we’re looking for people to get involved in any way they like; whether it’s putting the biscuits out at one of our coffee mornings or parachuting out of a plane! The group is here for absolutely anyone who wants to join in. We’ve had some great support so far from the Mold branch, but it’ll really take off when more people from the Wrexham area join in.
“Next May, to coincide with a year from my surgery, Ray and I, along with some friends are walking up all fifteen 3,000ft Welsh peaks. It’s going to be a great challenge but if it helps to build the Wrexham committee and raise funds for NWCR then it will be worth it!”
Anne Jackson, Chief Executive of NWCR, said: “We wanted to establish a committee in Wrexham, so held an open day to get to know the community. It was at this event that we first spoke to Jayne and now, just months later, the committee is ready to go. I’d like to thank Jayne, Ray, David and everyone else who has been so supportive of this new committee. I’m sure it will go on to play a key role in raising vital funds for years to come.”
