Student nurses, midwives and allied health professionals starting their studies in Wales from September 2019 will still be able to apply for bursaries, despite the scheme being scrapped in England.

Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths has welcomed the extension of the scheme by the Welsh Government.

In order for the full bursary package to be available, students must commit to working in Wales for up to two years after gaining their qualification.

Only 3% of the 2,180 students applying for bursaries in 2017/18 declined to work in Wales after their studies.

Lesley Griffiths AM said: “The NHS bursary scheme has proved to be a successful Welsh Labour Government initiative, highlighted by the fact the vast majority of students who train in Wales remain working here after completing their studies.”

“Whilst the Conservative UK Government decided to scrap the scheme in England last year, the Welsh Government will continue to support health care students in Wales, helping safeguard the future of our NHS.”
