A new look, new venue and new courses will welcome hundreds of visitors to tomorrow’s open day at Wrexham Glyndŵr University.

The north east Wales university is to hold the event in the sports centre on main campus for the first time on Saturday March 5th.

Prospective students will have a glimpse of the revamped guide to undergraduate degrees and courses, a bitesize and striking departure from traditional prospectuses seen in higher education.

Ahead of the arrival of incoming Vice-Chancellor Dr Maria Hinfelaar – who begins her tenure in April – the open day will feature a series of innovative new lectures and workshops with representatives from the Schools of Social and Life Sciences; Media, Art and Design; Engineering, Computing and Applied Science, the Graduate School and North Wales Business School.

Campus tours will also be available throughout the day; there will be appearances by robots Sheldon and Baxter, activities and one-to-one talks on student funding, disability support and welfare, demonstrations of Oculus Rift technology, spectacular scenarios in the immersive learning dome and much, much more.

Associate director of Communications, Recruitment and Marketing at Wrexham Glyndŵr University, Saffron Grover, said: “Our open days have always been popular but we want to take them to the next level so they fall in line with the fresh new approach we are taking towards recruitment, and ensuring prospective students get even more from us while they’re on campus, as well as continuing that relationship when they begin their studies here.

“The university has many strengths, none more so than in bringing people together, being at the heart of the north east Wales region and giving those who might not have previously had the chance to study for a higher education the opportunity to do so.

“We are all about community spirit; when you come to Wrexham Glyndŵr you are not just a face in the crowd, and that’s something we want to get across at our open days and through our new campaigns.”

The open day will also include subject-specific talks on the main campus by lecturers from Youth and Community Work, Occupational Therapy, Education, Childhood and Family Studies, and Aeronautical Engineering Design, a business talk by Alice Murray from Giggles and Games and an Introduction to Science and Environment courses.

Free bus travel is available from Ellesmere Port, Rhyl, Oswestry and Deeside for anyone who registers to attend, and North Wales School of Art and Design (NWSAD) on Regent Street will again be a hive of activity, with workshops and presentations on Design Communication and Fine and Applied Art, such as ceramics and jewellery.

At the same time, the university’s Northop campus hosts a subject-specific event highlighting courses including Animal Studies, Equine Science, Wildlife and Geography, Ecology and Biodiversity.

On the day, visitors can also enjoy access to facilities such as the Centre for the Creative Industries, Techniquest, The Centenary Club, Scene of Crime Suite, recording studios, flight simulator, the William Aston Hall and performance car laboratories.

Saffron added: “With us, you can realise your potential and the emphasis is on the student and their journey. As the university grows, so does our ambition, but we will never lose sight of our core values and the importance of the local area and our long-lasting partnerships to the future of the university.”

The open day runs tomorrow between 10am until 2pm. For more on free bus travel and to register for the event, visit www.glyndwr.co.uk.
