Local organisations celebrated for working towards making Wrexham dementia friendly
Organisations across Wrexham have been celebrated for their work to help make Wrexham more dementia friendly.
Earlier this month Dementia Friendly Wrexham held its second awards night to commemorate the efforts of local businesses, charities, schools and companies across the county borough.
Receiving awards were:
– Victoria Primary School for their work with pupils, staff and Governors which has led to many new Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends being created at the school. In the picture Head Teacher Debbie Eccles and Chair of Governors Andrea Evans
– Wrexham Fire Station for raising awareness of dementia amongst front line staff and making sure they are trained to respond suitably to any member of the public who might have dementia.
– Chirk Freedom Leisure for making the Chirk Leisure Centre dementia friendly and for piloting assisted swimming sessions for people with individual needs.
– Home Instead Senior Care for creating an office space which is dementia friendly, ensuring that all staff have received the dementia friend’s session as part of their inductions and for having such an active role within the community promoting dementia friendly communities.
– Wrexham Museum and Archives Service for making the Museum dementia friendly and for their support to the Wrexham Memory Cafes by providing reminiscence activities for people living with dementia.
– Ian Lucas M.P. and Lesley Griffiths AM for becoming dementia friends themselves and for making sure that all their staff, who offer advice or support to the public, are also trained.
Also receiving awards but unable to attend the ceremony were Starbucks Café, Eagles Meadow and Rhosddu Primary School.
Norah Lucas, chair of Dementia Friendly Wrexham said: We are very grateful to everyone involved in helping to make Wrexham a more dementia friendly place.
“People with dementia and their families can easily feel very isolated. It is good to know that there are so many local groups who are interested, want to help and who are finding out what they can do to make life better for people living with dementia.
“Shops, cafes, hairdressers, banks, churches, activity groups, or anyone who deals with the public, can all play their part, sometimes through quite small adjustments.”
