The actor who brought TV audiences the much-loved character of Boycie has agreed to lend his support to Wrexham’s Grove Park Theatre as a patron, following a much-praised show at the venue.

Boycie, AKA actor John Challis, appeared at the venue as part of his spring tour at the end of April.

Wrexham audiences warmed to the star of legendary comedies Only Fools and Horses and The Green, Green Grass…

Their affection has been rewarded with the star’s decision to back one of the area’s great theatrical institutions.

Grove Park Theatre – Wrexham’s oldest community theatre – is based in the town centre and provides the local community with a consistently high standard of shows.

Mr Challis said: “I have always received a warm welcome whenever I have visited Wrexham. My show at the Grove Park Theatre was a particular delight and I am more than happy to offer my support to the venue by becoming a patron.

“We need to support our theatres so that we keep them alive. I certainly received a warm welcome when I bought my Only Fools And Boycie show to the venue – I hope to return again at some point.”

The Grove Park Theatre offers an eclectic programme ranging from comedy, drama and suspense through to costume plays, pantomimes and musicals.

The Theatre is also due to celebrate two notable anniversaries in the coming two years. The society was formed in 1925, initially as Grove Park Old Boys’ Amateur Dramatic Society, and the group moved into its current building on Hill Street in 1954.

Stephen Giles, the theatre’s publicity director, said: ‘Having John Challis as a patron of our theatre is a magnificent achievement. It shows how much can be achieved by a group of committed volunteers.

“We have so much to be proud of in our theatre’s ninety-year story and this recognition takes our theatre to a new level – and brings great hope for the future.

“We’d like to thank John for his interest and for his support and we look forward to developing a closer relationship with one of Britain’s greatest comedy actors.”
