Fresh Police Appeal Over Car Arson – Elderly Lady Still In ‘Serious Condition’

Police are renewing their appeal for witnesses after arsonists set fire to a car in the Whitegate / Hightown area of Wrexham on Tuesday.

The elderly owner of the vehicle remains in a serious condition in hospital after being taken ill soon after the incident around 4am on November 13th at an address in The Orchards.

A man arrested nearby has been released with no further action to be taken. Meanwhile a youth, local to the area, was arrested yesterday afternoon and is currently being questioned at Wrexham police station.

Chief Inspector Alex Goss said: “We still need people to come forward with information from the local community and tell us who is responsible for committing this offence. We are unsure whether this incident is linked to a recent spate of arsons in the area and in depth investigation continues to take place. High visibility patrols will continue in the area of Caia Park and I can reassure the community that we will not leave any stone unturned in pursuing those responsible.”

Kevin Jones, Arson Reduction Manager at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Arson is a serious criminal offence. We take deliberate fires extremely seriously and are working hard to tackle this issue – in conjunction with North Wales Police, we will pursue convictions.

“But we need the local community to work with us and we are appealing for people to heed our safety advice and for anyone with information on this issue to contact North Wales Police.

“Deliberate fires are a serious form of anti-social behavior. They put extra pressure on fire and rescue resources. While crews are busy dealing with these incidents, there could be a real need for the resources elsewhere. And there remains the very real concern that such a fire could spread to a property, which could have devastating consequences.”
