‘Electrical demolition’ begins on Wrexham’s former police station
External work has started on the removal of an icon of the town’s skyline.
A large crane is on the site of the old Wrexham town police station tower removing electrical equipment from the top.
For those expecting a large explosive demolition popular with tower block removal around the world there is some disappointment, as removal is due to be via ‘mechanical and electrical demolition’ after a ‘soft strip’ of the interior. The latter has been taking place, with the external work now underway.
After demolition it appears the site will be left tarmaced with a 2 meter fence surrounding it, with a note in the application saying: “Sub level car parking and hard standing to remain.”
CADW had been considering listing the high-rise building, which was vacated by the last remaining officers at the station last January. However it was decided it was not worthy of being listed for its architectural or historical merit.
A new multi-million pound Eastern Command and Custody Facility has been built in Llay, with a section of the library now a town centre station.
In March plans to use the site on Bodhyfryd to house a new Lidl and a drive thru coffee shop were approved.
Plans for the development of the police station were revealed in 2018 when the discount retailer announced that contracts had been exchanged with North Wales Police to build a supermarket and drive-thru coffee shop on the now vacant site.
The application had been set for debate back in September 2019, but was deferred to allow the council’s highways department to respond to a series of objections submitted prior to the meeting by consultants acting on behalf of the neighbouring Asda.
