A local councillor is asking on Wrexham residents to be careful who they pay to collect household rubbish for disposal.

Gresford Councillor Andrew Atkinson has issued the appeal to residents following a series of fly-tipping incidents across the Wrexham area.

He is calling on residents to make sure they use a reputable company to dispose of waste on their behalf rather than relying on social media.

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste, this can vary from a single bin bag to thousands of tonnes of waste. It can be dangerous, pollutes land and waterways and costs local authorities ‘significant’ amounts of money to clear away.

Cllr Atkinson said: “Facebook selling pages are often full of posts from people advertising their services to dispose of rubbish and old white goods etc from your home or business, but do you know who they are? Are they reputable?

“I’m sure most are reputable but please do all that you can to ensure they properly dispose of your waste and don’t just take your cash and then fly-tip your rubbish on a country lane as happened in my ward recently.”

“Fly-tipping is disgusting and inexcusable and I hope that those responsible are all prosecuted.”

On Wednesday Cllr Atkinson posted an update on his Gresford News Facebook page that a large quantity of waste (pictured above) found dumped on Springfield Lane in Gresford had been removed.

Address details of the owners of waste were found in the pile, with Cllr Atkinson stating he had contacted the man and the council about the fly-tipping.

He says they produced proof that they’d paid someone through Facebook to come and collect the waste and this person/persons immediately dumped it.

The resident has since been out to collect the waste himself, with the council’s enforcement team removing the remainder of the mess.

Cllr Atkinson added: “If you do pay someone to collect your waste please do all that you can to ensure that they are a legitimate trader and keep their contact details for future reference.”

Incidences of fly-tipping can be reported to Wrexham Council.
