A residents association has arranged a community picnic to encourage residents to get involved in improving an area of wasteland situated on the former Brymbo Steelworks site.

The land accessed off Miller Road, which is part of the new housing development constructed by Bloor Homes was identified several years ago as potential for creating a new play space for children and young people.

Over the last few years Councillor Paul Rogers has argued for the area of land to be protected for recreation use to benefit the new housing development which lacks a large area of public open space.

The potential to develop this area has now received a boost after Brymbo Heritage Group were shortlisted as part of the Big Lottery Fund “Create Your Space” programme which could see several communities receive a share of over a million pounds in the coming years.

The community picnic has been organised by Plas Brymbo Residents Association with a view to discussing how to take forward the project.

Commenting on the proposal Cllr Rogers said: “It is widely acknowledged that the new housing development in Brymbo is in need of a larger recreation area for children, young people and families to enjoy.”

“I wish the community picnic every success as it is important that the community is consulted on any improvements.

“I have been keen for some time to see this area improved and welcome views of local residents. It is vital that any consultation is meaningful as the residents of the new housing development bought into a vision by developers which has still not been realised.”

The community picnic takes place on this Saturday 3rd September at 12pm off Miller Road.
