Birthday card delivered to hospital as people of Wrexham say a big ‘thank-you’ to NHS
Staff at Wrexham Maelor Hospital have taken delivery of a very special birthday card.
Ian Lucas MP and members of the Wrexham Labour Party called into the hospital to hand over the card, which is filled with well-wishes from members of the public.
Hundreds of signatures were collected at a street stall event marking the 70th birthday of the National Health Service. The event was hosted by the town’s Labour branch and members were joined on the day by Mr Lucas, MP for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths, Assembly Member for Wrexham, Vaughan Gething, the Welsh Government’s cabinet secretary for health, and local NHS staff.
Mr Lucas said: “The street stall event was a great day and I was especially struck by how strongly the people of Wrexham felt about the NHS. Everyone was so supportive on the day and it showed just what a much-loved and valued institution the NHS is.
“It was a pleasure to visit the Maelor with my local Labour Party colleagues and hand the card over.”
The NHS was launched by then health secretary Aneurin Bevan on July 5, 1948 and provided universal healthcare to all, free at the point of use.
The Wrexham street stall event was held in the town centre two days after the NHS’ 70th birthday, on Saturday, July 7th .
