Update Friday October 10th – Wrexham Council have today released a statement saying: “Bin collections WILL take place as normal on Tuesday 14 October following the postponement of Industrial Action.”

(Although Wrexham Council initially tweeted earlier to say bin collections will take place as normal on Tuesday 10th October, it was pointed out by one Twitter user that the 10th is today. However bin collections will take place as usual due to the postponement of Industrial Action on Tuesday 14th October)

Original Story: Council workers have announced they are to take part in a day of Industrial Action this month, affecting all scheduled waste and recycling collections on that day.  On Tuesday October 14th Council workers are set to take a day of Industrial Action, meaning there will be no residual waste, green waste, food waste or recycling collection services

Residents affected by this action will have their waste and recycling collected as follows: Tuesday 21st Octoberr – Black/Blue bins will be collected, recycling and food waste will be collected. There will be no collection of Green bins. Tuesday 28th October Normal collection services will resume as per your collections calendar.

The scheduled strike is due to take place in relation to an ongoing dispute over pay. Back in July plans were released regarding industrial action leading up to the TUC organised national march on October 18.

On the Unison website it states: “Unions representing over a million local government workers – GMB, UNISON and Unite – have agreed to escalate their dispute over pay with a campaign running into the autumn.

“The three unions have agreed that their members will run a co-ordinated strike of their local government and school members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Tuesday 14 October. UNISON will not proceed with strike action on 30 September.

“The strike will be just a few days before the TUC organised national demonstration on 18 October calling for decent pay.”

In an NJC document (viewed here) it states: “UNISON is urging members in local government and schools to take strike action for improved NJC pay rates, following the refusal of employers to meet the union‘s pay claim. The employer‘s side of the NJC refuses to re-negotiate on their 1% final offer.”

The document later adds: “Local government workers have already endured three consecutive years of pay freezes, followed by a below inflation settlement in 2013. For most of the workforce this year‘s offer will be a further pay cut, leaving their pay reduced by almost 20% since the Coalition came to power.

“At the same time, local government reserves have risen to over £19 billion. That means that councils have chosen to bank money, rather than reward the very people who are keeping their council services going – our members.”
