A new petrol station and drive-thru coffee shop are to be built on land near Wrexham Golf Club after plans were given the go ahead last night.

It was the third time members of the council’s planning committee had debated the application from Liberty Properties, which also include the development of a convenience store, ATM and car washing facilities

However a decision over the plans were previously deferred the decision after a site visit following concerns over road safety.

Last night committee members had the chance to vote on introducing traffic calming measures, including yellow transverse bar markings on the A5156 to slow speeds at the junction and concentric-spiral markings on the circulatory of the roundabout.

A third option also included 100, 200 and 300 yard markings to highlight to drivers when they are approaching the junction.

Cllr I David Bithell, Stansty ward, said he felt it was appropriate that some of the road markings and signage were introduced to improve safety and moved that the committee support the plans.

However Cllr Paul Roberts, Erddig ward, said he felt the proposals were still “extremely dangerous” and an “accident waiting to happen”.

Cllr Adrienne Jeorett, Smithfield, added: “Is there anything else we can do to improve road markings? With the lorries coming out of there, I am really worried about it.

“It’s a great idea but I am sure there will be an accident. Is there anything else we can do?”

Cllr Mike Morris, Holt ward, pointed out that that initial recommendation had been to approve without the additional measures.

Cllr Graham Rogers, Hermitage, queried if it would be possible to introduce traffic lights in the area, but was told by a highways officer that while it may be considered if LDP 2 (Local Development Plan) sites go through in future, it wasn’t a possibility now.

The plans – with additional road safety measures – were backed by a majority of committee members.
