MattParticipantMatt, you must be proud of the Facebook page SavePlasMadoc. Vile and disgusting posts by some.
Not in the slightest, I just happened to make my point there as the topic was relevant to that group. Facebook & social media in general is the wild west, you get many people who make reasonable & thought out postings, but many more who think it’s okay to say things on a computer that they would never dare say out loud & don’t even realise that these online postings can potentially be up there forever.
I would like to point out that some of the worst vile & disgusting comments I’ve ever read come fresh from Wrexham.com news stories on Facebook & that doesn’t make those who run this site any more responsible than those who run the Save Plas Madoc page. It’s the whole thing about internet censorship you can gag all views not aligned with your own that may be considered slightly iffy, or you can let them run within the freedom of speech rules.
At the end of the day hate type speech is so common online and those people come across as narrow minded idiots.

MattParticipantBe interesting to know what system Wrexham Council operate and how at risk their systems are.
Sounds very much like grounds for an FOI request if I ever heard one.

MattParticipantAndrew Atkinson has made it very clear on his Facebook profile in a response to someone asking him about the NHS that there should be more accountability in the Welsh NHS to stop Labour from blaming the Tories for its failings and admits the Conservative run English NHS also has problems. This was from a few days ago, so I wanted to know how he felt about how the Labour run Welsh NHS was running completely fine today on a day where the English run Tory NHS was crippled by a cyber attack with patient treatment unable to be provided in several locations. I was also very interested to know with his need for there to be accountability on health services in general who was going to be held responsible for this critical failure of the NHS in England? He might claim to be Welsh but he’s still a Tory and Tories must be kept away from our Welsh NHS at all costs.

MattParticipantSo you’re criticising the Tories for not dealing with the debt, yet are simultaneously advocating a candidate whose economic policies will substantially add to the national debt. The cognitive dissonance is astounding.
This Labour manifesto is one of the most expensive anyone’s ever seen, at a time of high and tight budgets. Most of the money will have to come from increased borrowing.
Socialism is wonderful, until you run out of other people’s money.
No, I’m pointing out that the Tories bash on about fiscal responsibility and want to shine a light on Corbyn’s proposed spending to be irresponsible but their track record is also less than exemplary. I will not put my hand up and say I am an expert in how much individual policies will cost because I believe very few armchair or professional ‘experts’ really have a clue. For example, no-one really knows how much Brexit is going to cost.
I also don’t particularly identify with any socialist or capitalist labels. What I do know is what the Tories have done since 2010 isn’t working and I’m willing to give someone else a chance to run the country. Yes, that’s a risk but I’d rather it than the Farce of Theresa May’s Team.
The Tories have tried to impose but have later u-turned several policies that could have directly impacted on my family, so I’m going to vote against a party that could affect me directly financially, rather than worry about any indirect national financial fears that could happen.

MattParticipantNot me – Darryl did that so I am reading it for the first time over a cuppa!
As a tangent I was pointed to this interesting post on the Save Plas Madoc Facebook page regarding the results and turnout https://www.facebook.com/groups/1388402681406725/permalink/1877799779133677/ and depending on your point of view the result there was either good / bad or indifferent. As you say, the winner there had 14% of the possible turnout and even less if you consider those who did not register to vote.
However, you can only play the game infront of you and all that!
I was quite vocal on that point, as I’d just seen Blackwell get voted in Live on the Wrexham.com video feed and really needed to vent. It has since thrown up interesting discussions across social media about not berating non-voters within areas perceived as deprived as there is an apparent disconnect between politicians and the ‘have-nots’ but I think that has always been the case. I think many people were unaware that there was a strong non-political type independent candidate standing in the ward but the message didn’t get across to the right number of people.
I had followed the post up on Wrexham.com’s interesting article about where there was low voter turnout as the discussion had continued on there. There was a small positive note that the turnout in Plas Madoc for local elections had increased from just under 20% last time to 27% this time, which doesn’t look much, but does actually represent a 35% increase in turnout. Which means all the political activism surrounding the Leisure Centre has at least made a few people take a greater interest [or perhaps it was all the Wrexham.com election coverage ;)]
So far though, the best thing I’ve had from all my online political rantings of late is an invite to the pub for a pint as apparently I need to get out more.

MattParticipantThat being said, Labour on a national level are currently a joke. Their policies sound attractive, but are completely unworkable without substantially increasing the national debt. It’s more of a optimistic wishlist than an actual manifesto.
Then there’s the Tories wonderful track record, increasing the national debt from just above £1trn when they came in in 2010 to £1.72trn this year, whilst achieving sweet FA. Mr Osbourne’s Austerity’s magic numbers machine. I don’t think Hammond’s grasp of numbers are very strong & stable either.
MattParticipantOMGG! Shef, isn’t a pick of us pair on the same page not enough?
I very much imagine it’s something a bit like this:

MattParticipantI cannot bring myself to vote for Corbyn due to his views on Trident.
Who do you want in charge to the keys to the nukes? Someone who has ruled out making a first strike nuclear attack, or a religious zealot who said they’d consider the nuclear option even if Britain was not under nuclear threat? Now I won’t be able to say I told you so if May in a state of needing sectioning decided to launch one as we’d all in fact be dead. We don’t need Britain’s poxy 120 or so operational nukes as we are more than covered by NATO membership & the powerful deterrent of the US’ 4,000+ nuclear stockpile.
Rather than spending £200bn+ on renewing Trident on a fear of a mythical nuclear war that never materialised that only people who still think through rose tinted glasses that the UK is a major military power on its own, why not put that money to good use in the NHS directly saving lives and making a real difference. Think of the number of nurses and doctors the money could pay for, the number of A&E wards & maternity wards it could stop from closing.
Because I can tell you now that the failure of the NHS will threaten far more lives over the next 50 years than any supposed nuclear holocaust. Yet those viewed as radical on these issues are the ones who want to focus money on things that save lives than things that have the potential to cause a major loss of life.
MattParticipantOk Matt, I’m game …..
But that would break the internet.
MattParticipantWrexham.com tried a Q and A with the Leader of the Council. He did not reply.
So we give up on something after 1 attempt in this life do we? I’m certain other more interesting people from around Wrexham would be more than happy to give a Q&A. People need to start thinking outside of the council and election box.
