Lilly – a rabid dog? If you look back over this thread you will see that I have questioned her actions in a perfectly reasonable way, stating my reasons and backed by statistics where available. These are questions that Ms Atherton is not answering herself.
If you put yourself in the position of representing your constituency then surely you have a responsibility to justify your actions.
Wrexham has already welcomed asylum seekers and refugees to Wrexham and Wrexham has been a welcoming, safe place for them. This action by Ms Atherton goes against this ethos and is morally wrong. I am questioning whether she will continue to toe the party line or make her decisions based on the need of her constituents.

Okay but my original post was about reuniting families. And whatever the figures I cannot condone that not being a priority.

In 2016 the Home Office received around 9,800 applications for children seeking asylum in the UK. In the same year it decided around 580 cases where the age of a child was disputed (as they were thought to be over 18) and in 370 (61%) it was decided that the child seeking asylum was over 18.

The percentage is the number found to be adults out of the challenged cases ie. 370 out of 580. Not the whole number of applications- 9,800. 370 out of 9,800 is 3%.

I read a very amusing book called How to Lie with Statistics while I was doing my degree, many years ago. And it is surprisingly easy to manipulate figures to suit your argument which has been ably demonstrated during this election.

However from the articles you cited it appears that only 3% of child asylum seekers turned out to be adult. But I do take your point, it is difficult to sift out reliable reporting.
Many of the people who voted for her didn’t do so because they wanted or expected her to do things like this, they just wanted what they voted for in the EU referendum. The official result was ‘leave,’ so I acknowledge that they’re right to feel aggrieved.
She campaigned on Brexit and very little else. Brexit will very soon be old news for the majority of the population. No more opinions sought or involvement in decisions from anyone except conservative MPs. So Ms Atherton must find some other sound bites. She certainly doesn’t seem to be capable of more than that.
The lady is our new MP, give her a chance……..she isn’t going anywhere for 10 years, why would anyone be against her?
Let’s hope not! A five year term should be long enough to judge her.

Sarah Atherton is not my cup of tea but she did get the best part of the vote share in Wrexham. If all the other parties had come together under one banner it would be different but not by such a huge amount.

Whilst totally against her input re disabled accommodation in Erddig I am not too convinced about child refugees. How & why are they making their way to the UK unaccompanied? We should question the why. I don’t believe that a 7 year old unaccompanied child would be turned away without excellent cause. One size doesn’t fit all & we shouldn’t just give blanket access without a lot of questions being asked.

At what age do children cease to be children now that the vote is to be given to 16 year olds?

We have all seen old press photos showing adult males posing as children. Where were the girls in these photos?[/

In answer to your question I assume a person to be a child who is under 18 but I don’t know the criteria for statistics used. I shall try to find out. I will also try to find gender information. But I would urge you to think about the reason asylum seekers leave their countries and travel hundreds of miles, often living in terrible conditions in camps and improvised shelters, are easy pickings for criminals of all kinds, sometimes for years. People do not leave their homes unless they have no other choice.
There are around 65.5 million people fleeing conflict, violence or persecution worldwide.
Most refugees go to a nearby country. In 2017 the top refugee hosting countries were: Turkey, Pakistan, Uganda, Lebanon, Iran, Germany, Bangladesh, Sudan Ethiopia, Jordan. Over 50% of refugees are children.
Less than 0.3% of the UK population are refugees.
Wrexham is the smallest of four ‘dispersal areas’ in Wales, meaning at any one time around 150 people seeking asylum are living in Wrexham through this scheme. Wrexham’s overall population is over 135,000.

Really? And what on earth makes you think that? Her acts thus far have been negative and she has failed to support the vulnerable people in Wrexham who would have welcomed her help. Her campaign focussed on Brexit and very little else, certainly nothing local. She’s had a chance to make a first impression that said, “I care”. But she obviously doesn’t!

I am really pleased to see that there is going to be some provision for support of people who sleep rough in Wrexham. I do hope any plans will take into account what happens to them during the day. They often have no choice but to wander the streets and shops, often being moved on. Somewhere where they can go to get warm, maybe a cuppa and a chat would be, I think, very welcome.

Unfortunately we know what the government is doing, or not doing. The Welsh Assembly is managing to counter some of the austerity cuts, as can be seen when we compare services in Wales with the massive run down of services in England. Wrexham council need to do the same. It’s too easy to throw up your hands and make excuses! Councillors need to work, admittedly within constraints, to do their best for everyone in Wrexham.
