Rowan Moore was commenting on the architecture of the building and Ty Pawb’s potential. No more and no less. He has a reputation for writing well-informed articles. I am sure somebody could find a critic to praise or decry what happens in the place, but he is an architecture critic, not an arts or business one. The People’s Market was grim claustrophobic low-ceilinged hole with all the appeal of a rarely cleaned municipal toilet bloc. If Rowan Moore had experienced what was there before, he would have found even more to praise in its rebirth as Ty Pawb.
I’m a recent convert to the idea that we should all place down our arms, embrace positivity and get behind this great asset that has been bequeathed to the town.
There’s a wonderful and inclusive exhibition on as I speak, featuring four artists who, through their work, tease out a number of aesthetic and political issues concerning Gypsy, Roma and Traveller lives through cultural representation.
Let’s all put our differences aside and come together to support and celebrate the future of Wrexham’s cultural revival.
Au contraire Mr Express, we need to convene and consider the bigger picture here.
Income from tourism is growing for the area at a time of simultaneous retail demise.
There may be an opportunity to buck the trend, increase footfall and income for the town whilst simultaneously reinventing Wrexham as a ‘Destination.
For example, there is no local rival within 130 miles for the infamous ‘Appleby Horse Fair’.
Something like this could really set the tills ringing, put the town on the map whilst Ty Pawb could plan to lure events such as the ‘Horse of The Year Show’ from London’s Olympia.
Problem with Ty Pawb is everyone was told it was going to be a ‘fantastic’ Art Hub yet the work inside has been mainly boring at best, art that you would shrug your shoulders at then carry on walking. Even the Liechtenstein and Hirst were poor let downs, its basically Pimlico with 4.3 million behind it.
The recent wall project (with a £5000 commission) went to the organisers friend who makes more work that people will shake shoulders at then carry on walking.
