As our new prison is about to open , we hope it will be properly staffed and well run so that the events making the headlines across the country in recent months will never be seen here. As a new build it is a blank canvas on which to build standards and expectations. If there was an incident how would the area cope? There are proposed cuts to our fire engine provision , the police station is moving further away out of town to Llay and the most worrying of all any extra pressure on the ambulance service and the Maelor Hospital. We must all hope that there are robust contingency plans that never have to be implemented.
Having met Russ Kent the new Governor he certainly seems to be a very modern thinker as far as the use of a prison as a place of reform and not just a lock them up and throw the key away. Let’s hope that he does not become ‘turned’ to old Prison ways of working.
It should be pointed out that HMP Birmingham is being run by a private contractor and HMP Berwyn will be run by the Government, Time will tell if different overall management makes a difference.
Some of those moved from Birmingham Prison after the riot there, are now causing trouble in Hull according to an article on the Guardian site. Probably luck Berwyn isn’t open yet.
With modern facilities , no over crowding, education opportunities and good health care , there will be few opportunities for complaints. The final straw that caused the Birmingham riot was lack of hot water apparently.
And they have access to our health services …. No further strain on them then.
Anyone visited casualty lately? Bet the prisoners don’t have to wait 11 hours to be seen.
