I do not understand how or why tenants would and would be allowed to refuse improvements to ‘their’ council house. In my own experience the improvement works – new kitchens & bathrooms – have been first class. Yes a few issues with some shoddy workmanship by contractors, but sorted with a word with the works supervisor. New, clean and functional fittings.

But the other point is how tenants are allowed to refuse. If it was a H&S issue like smoke detector or the gas supply for instance, works would have to be carried out.
I hope that any repairs reported to the council on ‘old style’ kitchen/bathroom are either refused or charged to the tenant.

Some older tenants just aren’t physically able to prepare for and/or can’t afford to keep redecorating after all these ‘improvements’. Having said that, the new kitchens and bathrooms in Colliery Road do look very nice.

That’s the point mate, they do not have to redecorate after, its all done as part of the spec! And the tiled splash-backs are much easier to keep clean.

It is now but hasn’t always been in the past.

I can think of a number of reasons why the underclass might object to having their kitchens renovated.

They might, for example, be anxious that the cache of narcotics that ‘our Kieran’ keeps concealed in the cupboard next to the stopcock not be discovered. Or perhaps the period during which the renovations are due to be carried out coincides with an arresting season of televised football.
