In your article today on Go and Vote you state that the polling stations are mainly staffed by volunteers- a volunteer is someone who does something for nothing — this is not the case for the Polling Staff they get paid an allowance for their time during the day and also for those who take part in the count.
Traditionally many teachers who had the day off due to their school being used as a Polling Station would ‘work’ the day. Other Council staff would take a days holiday and then get paid for the days Polling duty.
The full list of ‘allowances’ are available from the Council Chief Executive who is also the Returning Officer – which is also a role that incurs an additional allowance.
The cost of running elections are not paid for by the Local Authority but are claimable centrally and includes staffing and venue hire.
