Approximately 150,000 people flocked to the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham this year according to council figures.

Also 9% more people went to the eisteddfod in Wrexham than those who visited Ebbw Vale in 2010.

The figures were revealed in a report which is due to go before Wrexham County Borough Council’s Executive board next Tuesday.

Deputy leader of Wrexham Council, Cllr David Bithell said that the high visitor numbers show that Wrexham can hold a major event.

The possibility was also mentioned of hosting the young person’s eisteddfod, the Urdd in Wrexham in the future.

The report also showed that Wrexham Council’s stall attracted 22,000 visitors over the course of the eisteddfod.

Clare Fields, Strategic and Performance Director for the council said: “It was great to see so many schools participating in the event and they all got something out of it.

“Hopefully we’ll see an increase in the uptake of Welsh language classes following the eisteddfod.”

She also praised the council’s planning department for the minimal traffic disruption caused by the event, which came despite fears raised by residents close to the eisteddfod site.
