About Wrexham Maelor Hospital

The Wrexham Maelor Hospital is the second largest hospital in Wales and is run under the umbrella of the Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board.

Situated to the west of Wrexham the hospital can easily be accessed via the nearby A483, regular bus services from Wrexham Bus Station or by taxi from Wrexham General train station. Directions to the hospital can be found here.

The Maelor is a a major acute district hospital home to 34 wards and 697 beds. These wards offer a wide  range of services including accident and emergency, critical care, surgery, radiology, maternity, medical assessment, psychiatric care and more.

As it currently stands the first phases of the hospital was opened by the Duchess of  Kent in 1985, when services were transferred from the War Memorial Hospital. The second phase was opened by the Duke of Kent in 1998.

It eventually became an NHS Trust on 1st April 1993.

The hospital has close ties with several Welsh universities including the nearby Glyndwr University, Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea and is also home to Wrexham Medical Institute.
