“THE HOWARD DE WALDEN FAMILY, CHIRK CASTLE, 1911 – 1946, THE SOCIETY YEARS – ABOVE AND BELOW STAIRS” is the title of a talk to be given to the Wrexham Area Civic Society. It will be given by Jill Burton, who for 21 years was the Education Officer for the National Trust at Erddig and Chirk Castles.

Thomas Scott-Ellis, the 8th. Lord Howard de Walden, leased Chirk Castle from 1911 to 1946. He was a widely knowledgeable poet and playwright, soldier and artist, Olympic sportsman, medievalist and sponsor of the arts. Thus the castle and its large domestic staff played host to a wide variety of prominent politicians, artists, musicians and writers of the day.

Jill has spent many years collecting memories and stories from past employees and from those who remember these years. We look forward to hearing her sharing them with us.

The meeting is open to all, free to attend.
