Nominees for the Wrexham Sports Awards 2016 will be in the running to win a football signed by players with Wrexham Football Club – thanks to a councillor’s donation.

Cllr Bob Dutton, Lead Member for Corporate Services and Health and Safety, donated the ball, which was signed by Wrexham FC after a game against Dover on August 6.

All nominees – including those already put forward – will be put into the draw to win the ball.

Cllr Dutton said: “I’m pleased to be able to donate the ball for such an important cause – the more nominees are put forward for the Sports Awards, the more sporting heroes are recognised in the county borough.”

Cllr Ron Prince, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, added: “I’m very grateful to Cllr Dutton for the donation of this football – it’s an excellent symbol of sporting spirit in Wrexham, and it will be welcomed by whoever wins it.

Cllr Prince added: “I would urge anyone who thinks they may know a local sporting hero to put them forward for the Wrexham Sports Awards 2016.

“A lot of effort is put in to small teams, clubs and sporting organisations, and a lot of it could go unnoticed. The reason we hold the Sports Awards is to ensure they get the praise they deserve, and to show the public just how much good sport can do in our communities.”

The annual Wrexham County Borough Sports Awards will return in the autumn, with junior sportsmen and women, coaches, schools, clubs and teams to all be recognised for their hard work and achievements.

Awards will be presented in the following ten categories:

– Junior & Senior Sports Personality of the Year
– Disability Sports Personality of the Year
– Service to Sport Award
– Junior and Senior Volunteer of the Year Award
– School Achievement Award
– Coach of the Year
– Club of the Year
– Team of the Year

The Sports Awards will take place at the Brymbo Sports and Social Complex (College Hill, Brymbo, Tanyfron LL11 5TF) on Thursday, November 3, with nominations closing on Friday, September 30.

Nominations are encouraged from individuals, sports clubs, schools and volunteers to ensure that the outstanding work and athletic achievement of local people is recognised by the whole community.
