A record crowd flocked to the Racecourse on the weekend to see Wales take on the USA in the Rugby League World Cup.

A crowd of 8,019 – a record for a Rugby League international at the Racecourse Ground – witnessed a massive World Cup upset when newcomers USA beat Wales 24-16.

Rugby League World Cup 2013 organisers in Wrexham have thanked the plus fans who turned out to see the town’s first Rugby League World Cup 2013 match.

It is hoped that another bumper crowd will attend the Quarter Final on Saturday 16 November – which could see USA return to the Racecourse to face Australia.

Cllr Neil Rogers, Leader of Wrexham Council said: “It was great to see the Racecourse Ground looking so full for our first match of Rugby League World Cup 2013.

“A crowd of over 8,000 shows there is a real appetite in Wrexham for world class sporting events and I hope the success of our first Rugby League World Cup 2013 match will lead to more events of this calibre coming to the town.

“It was also encouraging to see so many families watching the match, hopefully they came away from the match inspired and keen to watch more games or get involved with their local amateur club.

“We’ve got the quarter final to come on Saturday November 16 and it would be great if we could get another bumper crowd here in Wrexham.”

Tickets for the Quarter Final between the Winners of Groups A & D are available online at www.rlwc2013.com/tickets, in person at the Glyndwr University box-office or by calling the Rugby League World Cup ticket hotline on 0844 847 2013.
