Young people and organisations across Wrexham recently came together to celebrate World Children’s Day.

Established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is celebrated on November 20 each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.

This year Wrexham County Borough Council marked the event with a free event for children, young people and families in Ty Pawb called ‘Your Voice in Wrexham’ on Thursday 18December.

Your Voice in Wrexham’ was a fun and interactive event that celebrated children and young people’s place in our society.

The event was opened by the Senedd Yr Ifanc chair Cameron and featured speeches from Wrexham Mayor Ronnie Prince and Senedd Yr Ifanc members.

During the day visitors had the chance to enjoy information stalls, free food, festival faces, play activities, live performances and lots of other fun activities.

Performances included live music from local band Abstract, singer song writer Steve Jones, magic tricks from Ian’s Close up Magic and circus performance from James Blazley. All being captured by Lisa from 1000 words with infographic drawings.

Commenting on the event, Cameron, Chair of the Senedd yr Ifanc (Wrexham Youth Parliament), said: “The World Children’s day was a massive success which was incredibly fun.

“Thank you to everyone who attended and celebrated children and young people’s rights with us.’

Scarlett, Vice-Chair of the Senedd yr Ifanc (Wrexham Youth Parliament), said: ‘The World Children’s Day event was really fun.

“Ty Pawb was filled with activities, music, and people – it was buzzing with life and energy! It was great to see so many come together to enjoy themselves and learn about the different organisations – the night was very informative.

“A big thanks to Abstract for their music, the catering stalls, the amazing magicians, and of course all the groups that came and taught us about their work.”

To mark the occasion Wrexham Council also turned the Guildhall blue for the evening – with blue being the international colour of World Children’s Day.

Donna Dickenson, Head of Prevention and Support Wrexham County Borough Council, said: ‘I was really happy to be part of the celebrations for World’s Children Day and was grateful to be part of turning the world blue in support of children’s rights.

|The voices of children and young people are really powerful because they are well informed about the issues they care about and in my experience of working alongside them, they are also really creative in thinking about how to solve them.

“When we lit the Guildhall up in blue, it looked lovely but most importantly it united everyone around a message of promoting the rights of children and young people not just on that day, but at every opportunity.”

Tricia Jones, Youth worker for the Senedd yr Ifanc, added: ‘We lit up the Guildhall to show the importance of children and young people in Wrexham.

“All children and young people in Wrexham have children’s rights and we need to promote them within the community.”
