Wynne Construction wins contract to transform Yale College

Wynne Construction has won a multi-million pound contract, to design and build a new centre for Coleg Cambria’s Yale site in Wrexham, pending the approval of a planning application.

The new three-storey, 96,000sqft building is to house facilities for catering, creative arts, and sports students along with providing general teaching and IT studios, replacing the elements of the campus’ existing buildings, which will be demolished. The facility will also be home to the National Library of Wales digital archive, where members of the public can access information on Welsh culture and heritage.

Wynne Construction say: “The proposed campus revamp supports the Wrexham Town Masterplan, which outlines the need for projects in the area to benefit the local economy. If the scheme achieves planning permission, Wynne Construction will begin work on the site in early 2019 after winning the contract through the North Wales Construction Framework.”

The project is the latest contract win in the education sector for the company, which has completed several new buildings for the same client in Northop and Deeside, as well as several primary schools across the North Wales region. Locally the firm have been constructors on Coleg Cambria’s £10m Bersham Road site, the Ty Pawb market and arts centre, and the state-of-the-art Gwenfro Primary School.

Design work has started on the Yale campus, with the company using Building Information Modelling (BIM) to create a 3D virtual model of the campus before construction starts.

Andy Garner, Design Manager, said: “Our design knowledge of education facilities is extensive, and as a company we have always successfully delivered new schools and colleges.

“This expertise was important in securing the contract, which will be completed ready for students to attend in September 2020. We’re excited to be working on the project, which will serve as a catalyst for the regeneration of this particular area in Wrexham.”

The Yale campus is one of six higher education sites operated by Coleg Cambria, and the development will be partly funded by the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme.
