A new sports scheme which boosts children’s agility, balance and coordination is being launched by Wrexham County Borough Council in partnership with Glyndwr University and Sport Wales.

Nearly 12 months after the Lesotho Olympic Team arrived in Wrexham for a successful pre-games training period, the ‘Multi Skills’ programme will ensure children across North Wales continue to enjoy the London 2012 legacy.

The initiative will equip children with the fundamental physical skills before moving on to focus on specific sports.

Graham Williams, Sport Wales Manager for North Wales said: “We want to see every child in Wales hooked on sport for life, so it is extremely encouraging to see that the legacy of 2012 is still inspiring young people in Wrexham to try different sports.

“The ‘Multi Skills’ programme provides these youngsters with the opportunity to develop the basic skills required to progress in many different sports as they get older.  We are again delighted that both the children of Wrexham and now Lesotho will be able to benefit from this programme.”

Further to rolling the programme out in Wales, Glyndwr University in conjunction with Wrexham Council and Sport Wales have taken measures to develop the Lesotho legacy by signing up to a global citizenship project.

Part of this project will see sporting resources, teacher training and mentoring being shared between the two countries.

Bethan Hughes, Active Young People Manager at Wrexham Council said: “By arming children with core physical skills, it is hoped that they will enjoy sports more as they become more competent and confident.

“By supporting young people –in and out of a school setting – their basic skills will help them stay engaged with physical activity throughout their lifetime.”

With less than 500 days to go until the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games the Lesotho Minister for Sport is due to visit North Wales in early Spring.

Dragon Sport & Multi-Skills for children aged 6-11 is available at Morgan Llwyd Sports Centre at 5.15-6.00pm every Monday – £2.00 with a Pure card or £2.40 without. For more information contact Queensway Stadium on 01978 355826.
