Wrexham is to lose its Phones 4u branches following the announcement that hundreds of stores up and down the country are to close.

On Sunday evening it was announced that 362 Phones 4u stores would remain closed, with nearly 1,700 jobs being lost across the UK.

Phones 4u had two retail branches in Wrexham town centre, based on Queens Street and Eagles Meadow – however following yesterday’s announcement both will remain permanently closed.

Five other stores across North Wales will also close, inluding units in Llandudno, Rhyl, Bangor, Caernarfon and Colwyn Bay. However the store on Parc Prestatyn will be taken over by Vodafone.

The news comes after the transfer of 140 stores to Vodafone, 58 stores to EE and 160 concessions to Dixons Carphone, transferring more than 2,000 staff.

Last week it was announced that the mobile phone store had entered into administration, with all stores across the country would be closed with immediate effect.

Phones 4u had 720 outlets, including 550 standalone stores, and employed 5,596 people.

In a statement released on PWC’s (administrators for Phones 4u) website, it notes: “Unfortunately, there is limited interest in the balance of the estate from parties considering going concern offers. This comprises 362 stores.

“Regretfully, as a result, the administrators announce that those stores will close permanently and 1697 staff employed at these locations will be made redundant. Another 720 people have been retained in the short term to assist with the closure programme.”
