Wrexham Sheep Trail to Launch Across County Borough in 2016
Wrexham’s infamous flock of fibreglass sheep are to make a grand return next year – with a sheep trail consisting of 20 sheep set to launch.
Last month Wrexham.com reported that plans had been put forward to launch a ‘sheep trail’ across the town centre. However at yesterday’s Town Centre Forum Meeting it was revealed that a ‘flock’ of around 20 ornamental sheep will be located across the county borough as part of the trail.
Overall around 19 businesses have signed up to take part in the sheep trail, which is due to launch across the county borough from March 2016.
Speaking at the meeting, Destination Manager at Wrexham County Borough Council, Joe Bickerton said: “The Tour of Britain Sheep were there to celebrate and got people talking, along with local businesses and schools asking about them.
“We’ve had a number of schools and businesses working together to sponsor the new flock of sheep. We’ve had 19 businesses signed up and there are 20 sheep in storage to be painted and decorated over winter. We will have them situated over county from around March.
To commemorate the Tour of Britain’s visit to the town centre in September, Doris, Blessing and Wheely Good Sheep, Champion and Jack Mary Ann were placed on St Giles to overlook the cyclists as they rode into the town centre.
However Wrexham’s sheep have become somewhat infamous since they first arrived in the town back in August -with several incidents of theft and vandalism resulting in the sheep being moved to a ‘safe location’ back in October.
More recently Champion, who was stolen at the start of October was found on top of Dinas Bran, Llangollen. Due to its travels across Wrexham, Champion looks set to become the ‘Ambassador for Adventure’ in Wrexham next year!
Due to the previous theft issues relating to the sheep, questions have been raised on how the new additions to the flock can be kept safe during the trail next year.
Mr Bickerton said: “Lessons learnt from the St Giles incident, engineers have looked at filling them with concrete. A lot of the sheep will be on private premises this time, so hopefully exempt from vulnerability.”
