Residents of Wrexham are being encouraged to show their support for their local Poppy Appeal.

The appeal was launched formally in Wrexham at the end of October by the Royal British and Wrexham Council. The appeal aims to raise funds for the armed forces and will end on November 9th.

Every poppy helps raise the £1.6 million needed by the Legion each week to deliver direct, practical care and support to Armed Forces community ie the British Armed Forces past and present, and their families. and thus the Poppy Appeal allows the Legion to provide life-long support for those in need.

Each year the Legion answers over 170,000 calls for help and has been helping Service people past and present for 90 years.

Over the past few weeks in Wrexham, a number of poppies have been appearing around the town on lamp-posts, signs, the Racecourse and even the Guildhall. To also raise awareness of the appeal and to raise funds, a street collection will take place on the 8th and 9th of November.

A pop up stall to raise awareness on what the Royal British Legion do, is also in the Butchers’ Market.

Royal British Legion community fundraiser for North Wales, Kevin Forbes, said: “The key thing about the Poppy Appeal is you need to be in some time of need. If you need something, you will get it.

“You need people to point you in the right direction if you need help.”

The Legion provides many services for the Armed Forces community, including Poppy Breaks, which offer time away to serving and ex-Service personnel and their families.

An Independent Inquest Advice (IIA) Service is also offered, which provided the families of those who’ve died in Service – including Reservists on active Service – with free, independent and expert legal advice and assistance. Last year 100 families were supported through the IIA.

Adventure breaks for young people from Service families, grant schemes, and benefit and money advice services are also provided by the Legion.

On Sunday 10 November the Annual Service of Remembrance be held at the Royal Welch Fusiliers Memorial, Bodhyfryd, at 10:55am. However a two minutes silence will also be held on Queens Square on Monday 11 November.
