Wrexham General Is 16th Busiest Station In Wales – Yay!
In new data released today Wrexham’s two stations are down 3% on usage, however taking out Wrexham General from the figures shows an increase of 10% for local stations.
Unsurprisingly London stations continued to be the most heavily used stations in Britain last year according to the data released by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).
The data does give a more local insight to rail usage, showing that Wrexham Central had 73,444 ‘entrances and exits’ last year, and Wrexham General 551,966.

The data is for every station in Britain (including the quietest in Cambridgeshire with just 22 entries/exists in a year!) allowing a look slightly further afield from Wrexham:

This of course would not be a page of stats if we did not have a league table to see where we rank against other welsh stations…!

The following graphic was also created by the Office of Rail and Road to show the busiest stations in Wales for those who apparently cannot digest plain lists as above:
The estimates of station usage across Britain also shows that:
- The total number of entries and exits at stations across Britain in 2014-15 increased by over 119m – a 4.5% rise compared to the year before.
- There has only been one change to the list of top 10 stations most used stations this year, Stratford Station entered the list with over 30 million passenger entries and exits – a 17.4% jump compared to 2013-14.
- Nine of the top 10 stations were located in London. Birmingham New Street was the only station located outside London.
As with statistics they come with disclaimers, which in this case include: “A number of improvements to the methodology have been implemented over recent years. These changes should be taken into account when considering changes in usage between years, as it may be a result of improved methodology, rather than reflecting an actual change in demand at the station.”
Interestingly the data stretches back to 1998, where the earliest recorded information for Wrexham General shows 313,872 entrances and exits.
