Two branches of Clinton Cards in Wrexham town centre are under threat after the company entered the brink of administration this morning.

Clintons asked the London Stock Exchange to suspend their shares earlier today putting 628 stores in danger nationwide.

The chain runs two stores in Wrexham on Regent Street and in Eagles Meadow which are believed to employ around 15 staff between them.

The move comes after the retailer’s banks sold its £35m worth of loans to the chain’s biggest supplier American Greetings who said they would force Clintons into administration.

In March the company reported a pre tax loss of £3.7m for the six months to the end of January and on Wednesday announced that like-for-like-sales were down by 3.5%.

The news comes as another blow to Wrexham’s high street which has seen both Peacocks and Game close in recent months.

It is understood that Clintons will be run by an administrator with a view to being sold, however a large number of store closures are likely.

Analysts have cited competition from online retailers such as Moonpig and Funky Pigeon and also from supermarkets as the main cause of the retailer’s demise.
