Wrexham AM prasies Salvation Army for its “invaluable community work”

A church and registered charity which offers priceless support to the local community has been praised by Wrexham’s Assembly Member.

Lesley Griffiths AM recently visited the Wrexham Salvation Army Church and Community Centre, located on Garden Road to meet with Capt. Ian Davis.

Ms Griffiths discovered more about the number of community initiatives instigated by The Salvation Army which support people of all ages from a wide cross-section of society.

The Lunch Club and Good Company meetings help tackle social isolation and the Forget Me Not Friendship group and Singing by Heart choir are dementia friendly, supporting those living with the disease.

There are services primarily focused on helping people into work, such as Employment+, that also provide help with digital inclusion. The Employment Development Consultants on site can offer more specialist employment help, including work placements.

The charity also offer free brass instrument lessons for children, host a parent and toddler group called Little Feet and their Identity group helps people recovering from addiction.

The Salvation Army are arguably best known for the work they do with the homeless community. Their Thursday morning drop-in session offers individuals a cooked breakfast and distributes clothing, bedding and toiletries.

In addition to supporting those who are homeless, the service is also open to people living in temporary accommodation, as well as those fortunate enough to be re-housed.

Working in partnership with the Community Care Collaborative and the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW), The Salvation Army help run the innovative Community Care Collaborative. A key reason for the initiative’s ongoing success has been the venue on Garden Road, with service users appreciating the warm, hospitable environment.

After her visit, Ms Griffiths said: “The Salvation Army is a trusted, well-respected name and Ian and his team reflect and epitomise that reputation by offering invaluable support to our local community.”

“Their person-centred approach enables the staff and volunteers to get to know the individuals and tailor their needs to the appropriate group or service. It means their centre is thriving and used by members of the public every single day.”
