Students in Wrexham schools are once again celebrating as they receive their A Level results – with some great results for schools in and around the town!

Today’s results show an overall A level pass rate of 99% which is above the all Wales figure and also above performance in Wrexham schools in 2012. 29% of grades awarded were at A* or A, which is a significant increase on the figure for 2012 and is significantly above the all Wales figure.

94.0% of Wrexham schools’ sixth formers achieved the Level 3 threshold, which is in line with last year’s figure. The Level 3 threshold performance measure takes into account all qualifications, including A and AS Level, vocational and skills qualifications.

The pass rate for Wrexham schools’ sixth form leavers achieving the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma qualification is 97%, which is marginally below last year’s exceptional results but once again well above the Welsh figure of 82.7%. This year, 86% of Wrexham schools’ sixth formers followed the qualification which requires students to be successful in a range of traditional academic, vocational and skills qualifications. This is an increase on the figure of 83% who studied for the Advanced Diploma in 2012.

Staff and students at The Maelor School in Penley were delighted with another year of excellent ‘A’ level results with 96% of students achieved at least 2 ‘A’ levels. 76% of A levels were awarded A*-C.

Speaking on behalf of all the staff at the school headteacher Simon Ellis commented “These results reflect the years of hard work and effort that the students have put in. We are delighted that so many of our students will now be able to move to their university of choice or begin in their chosen careers we all wish them well for their future.”

Head of Sixth Form Mrs Sue England said “This group of students have been very positive and motivated throughout their time in the school, many of them have volunteered to help their community and taken part in a range of extra activities in addition to their studies. I am so pleased them for them all”

Cllr Michael Williams, Lead Member for Children’s Services and Education said of the results in Wrexham “Our young people are to be warmly congratulated for their commitment, hard work and success. They, along with their families and schools, can be very proud of their achievements. I am particularly pleased to see the large numbers of Wrexham students achieving the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification.”

Amongst the impressive Coleg Cambria statistics are three former Darland High School pupils – Robert Selman from Rossett who gained 3A*s and 2As including an A* in Mathematics enabling him to study Veterinary Science at Cambridge; Rob McHugh from Marford who with 3As will progress to Manchester University to study Medicine and Alys Jones from Gresford gaining 2As and a B. Rebecca Hesp from Bradley in Wrexham achieved two A*s and an A and will progress to study Mathematics at Manchester.

After speaking to a number of students collecting their results David Jones, Principal and Chief Executive of Coleg Cambria, said: “I would like to congratulate all our A-level students at Coleg Cambria Yale and Deeside on their achievements this year and wish them every success for the future, whether they are progressing to university, an apprenticeship or into employment.

John Davies, Wrexham’s Head of Lifelong Learning says “I congratulate Wrexham students as they celebrate their achievements. These results today are the culmination of two years’ commitment and hard work by our young people, supported by their families and schools. I am particularly pleased to see the significant increase in the number of students achieving Grades A* and A, which compares very favourably with performance across Wales. I wish all our students well as they move on to higher education, training or employment. Well done everyone and congratulations!”
