Over the next few months there are many opportunities to get on board with at the Oriel, with a number of exhibitions and events taking place at the gallery.

The Wolves Are Running is on exhibition in Gallery one, and will be on display until January 4th. The display showcases artists, illustrators, makers & craftspeople who have explored the use of mixed media multi-artform. Artists include Jessie Chorley, Jennifer Collier, Ann McCay  and Barry Morris. It is free to attend this exhibition.

Alongside The Wolves Are Running, in Gallery two the exhibition And Also…. has the word of artists and illustrators who have been inspired by folk art. Some of the artists whose work is on display include Sian Bailey, Laura Knight and Alice Patullo. This display is also free to attend.

Elsewhere in Gallery there, there is the ScrapArt – I’m not bothered! exhibition, which contains sculpture, photography and moving image by young people from Wrexham Youth Justice Service; who have worked with contemporary artists Karen Heald and Angela Davies.

On Thursday November 21st, a seminar focusing on Folk: The Role of Tradition in Contemporary Art Practice will take place at the Oriel. Starting at 10.30am, the seminar will finish at 4.30pm.

The event itself will be run by Led by Desdemona McCannon , Senior Lecturer Art History and Contextual Studies at MMU & Yadzia Williams, Senior Lecturer in Design Communication at Glyndwr University. The exhibition will examine the way ‘lore’ is illustrated and the link between documenting folk art and using it in creative practice. The idea of the artist as ethnographer, the turn to ‘folk’ values in contemporary art and design cultures, and the distinction between ‘professional’ and ‘amateur’ creativity will be discussed.

It is £10 per person for this event.

Starting from December 3rd, Un-Deg-Un (the old JJB store) will be playing host to ‘Pecha Kucha’, an opportunity for people from the creative industries (all artists/students/designers welcome) to give short presentations, share ideas and network. If planning to present, it is recommended that you book a fortnight in advance (leaving name, email address and contact telephone number). Bring your Petcha Kutcha style presentation (20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each) on a disc or memory stick.

The events will take place from 5:30pm – 7:00pm on first Tuesday of every other month, and costs £7 per person. However for live event bloggers and students it will cost £5.

Looking ahead to next year, on January 11th, the Strand // llinyn exhibition will begin. Running until March 29th,  the exhibition will look at the work of four artists and explore the use and symbolism of hair in their work.
