Welfare Centre to Open in Town Ahead of Festive Period
A new town centre Welfare Centre which aims to treat people and ease demand on Wrexham’s A&E department is set to open in December.
Work is currently underway on partially converting public toilets on Town Hill / St Giles Way into a Welfare Centre which will provide treatment services and help on Saturday evenings.
The new welfare centre comes as a result of £200,000 in funding from the Welsh Government.
Redevelopment works of the Albion toilets began a few weeks ago and involve the demolition and rebuilding of a gable wall. The welfare centre will also see a reduction in the number of public toilets which will be available at the facility.
At present there are 17 public toilets in the Albion facilities, however these will be reduced to three public toilets and one disabled toilet. These will be accessed from the street and will be be controlled by electronic payment mechanism.
The centre will be a permanent feature in the town centre and will be open every Saturday night, along with key dates – such as Bank Holiday weekends and sporting events.
Over the August Bank Holiday Weekend a pop-up British Red Cross Centre was created at the bottom of Town Hill. On the 31st August a total of sixteen minor casualties were treated at the centre and two vulnerable females were taken home.
It is hoped that the permanent fixture will be a benefit to visitors and partners in the town centre and also reduce the burden on the Welsh Ambulance Service and A&E.
Along with the opening of the Welfare Centre key dates over the festive period have also been highlighted, including Friday 18th December, Saturday 19th December, Christmas Eve, Boxing day, Sunday 27th December, Monday 28th December and New Year’s Eve.
It is anticipated that evening road closures on Town Hill and the High Street will be implemented for some of the key dates across the festive period.
The new Welfare Centre will formally open at the start of December.
