‘Take pride in our town’ was the motto during a voluntary clean-up event across the streets of the town centre last weekend.

Early on Sunday 26th June a large team of volunteers took to Wrexham Town Centre to spruce up the streets and ‘lift the tired look of the town’s street scene’.

The volunteers cleaned and painted every bollard and lamppost from Chester St to Henblas St and back down to Chester St, with lots of other jobs also being done including weeding, litter removal, painting benches and more.

One of the organisers, Conservative Campaigner Andrew Atkinson praised the success of the event, stating: “I’m thankful to everyone that joined us, especially Gateway Church Wrexham as they changed their church service time to bring everyone along to help, it would not have happened with out them. This is the second time that they have done this now and their support is amazing.

“Thanks also to Keep Wales Tidy who are coming back to clean away the graffiti that we identified, Wrexham Council for their support and to Greggs who provided free drinks for our volunteers.

“It’s great that so many people are willing to give up their time to take pride in our town.”

The clean-up event was the fourth of its kind to have taken place over the past 12 months, with the initiative launched by members of the Town Centre Forum and Town Centre Steering Group.

Previous events have seen volunteers tackle Lord Street, Regent Street and Hope Street.

Rupert Leslie from Gateway Church said: “We love Wrexham and want to play our part in making a difference in our town. We see events like the Town Clean as an opportunity to demonstrate this in a very practical way.

“We were happy to move our church meeting time again as we wanted to ensure that we were able to encourage as many people as possible to come and help.

“It was fantastic to see how much was achieved in a few hours as everyone worked together. It’s a pleasure to continue to work with our community, for our community.”

Cllr Wynn, who also helped organise the event added: “A big thank-you to everyone who took part in Sunday’s town-centre tidy up event. Painting all the lampposts and bollards along Henblas and Chester Street has helped to lift the tired look of the town’s street scene.

“There are other parts of the town-centre which the Town Forum are planning to spruce up later in the summer so please feel free to join us if you have a free Sunday morning.”

The weekend also saw great success for the eighth Wrexham Street Festival, which has been described by Town Centre Forum Chairman, Nigel Lewis, as the ‘best yet’.
