Town centre carpark eyesore site gets much needed clean up

An area between Market St carpark and Tŷ Pawb has finally had a tidy up after long term neglect.

Last month videos and images were circulating of the mess behind Tŷ Pawb and by the Market St carpark noting human excrement and ‘pigeon detritus’.

A particularly grim bin and long positioned shopping trollies were included in the walk through, along with general rubbish and weeds, in an area that has been noted for its interesting summertime fragrance.

It is unclear if the images and video prompted the clean up however there has been a recent flurry of activity in the area with senior councillors and officers paying attention to it.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport told us: “A lot of work has been carried out by our Streetscene officers to improve the appearance of the area.”

The area has seen the number of bins reduced and reorganised, with a new fenced off area being created to house them. We are told that a permanent structure could be put in place in the future.

One particularly disgusting bin just a couple of metres away from Tŷ Pawb’s entrance has been removed, and the whole area has had general waste taken away as well as weeding taking place to smarten things up.

Several other bins have been removed from the site, some did not have owners and it is unclear how long they were sat there presumably uncollected.

The new space is more organised and tidier, prompting some in the council pondering if an extension to the Market Street carpark could now take place, with several extra car parking spaces potentially created to generated much needed revenue for the local authority.

One piece of graffiti near to the Tŷ Pawb Market St entrance was rivalling the iconic ‘Deano is a t**t’ scrawl that lived in the People’s Market stairwells for years, and despite an attempted clean earlier this week, on popping past yesterday it does appear to have finally gone – after almost a year:

The above image was taken early September, and Monday this week showed signs of an attempted clean:

The graffiti was finally removed by yesterday:

We are told since the clean up other areas of the town have come into focus with questions raised internally at the council over how ‘basics’ such as weeding and keeping on top of graffiti have been missed for so long, especially in a place that is a route to a multi-million pound investment of Tŷ Pawb as well as a carpark that could be a visitor’s first impression of Wrexham.
